Businesses across Ghana have begun operating multi-shift systems under the 24-Hour Economy Programme, creating employment opportunities through the programme’s ‘1-3-3’ model, the Chief Programme Officer of the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Secretariat, Mr. Abdul-Nasser Suglo Alidu, has said.

He said state enterprises, the downstream petroleum sector and some member companies of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) are among those already running shifts, showing that the employment component of the programme was underway.
Mr. Alidu made the remarks on Joy FM’s Top Story, where he discussed progress on the programme’s implementation.

“Within the government sector alone, there are about eleven state enterprises that are currently doing multi-shift. You know about what is happening in the petroleum sector, where about 268 fuel stations are piloting this multi-shift. Even within the AGI, there are about 33 companies today that have confirmed that they are running this,” he said

Mr. Alidu described these as evidence that the system was working and that participating businesses were adopting the employment arrangement.

He however cautioned against reducing the 24-Hour Economy to the 1-3-3 model alone explaining that the measure of progress was whether businesses were moving to multi-shift operations, and that this was already happening.

The 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme seeks to expand production, accelerate exports and create sustainable jobs, particularly for young people, by enabling businesses to operate beyond the traditional working day.
